The paperback edition of TIME AFTER TIME hit shelves this week, so if you like time — and time travel books — on the bendy side, you’re in luck!
Seeing both books in paperback feels a bit like the end of a really special and amazing journey for me. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately, reflecting on this adventure and how much I’ve learned over the last six years.
I began writing Time Between Us in December 2008. For two years, I worked on it every day, often between work meetings and late at night after my kids were asleep. I spent a lot of that time dreaming about it being published, but deep down, I was absolutely terrified about that idea. I’d never let anyone read my stories (not even my husband). So I told myself I was writing it just for me, to say I’d done it, and because the act of putting words on paper bought me indescribable joy. That much was certainly true.
But once I completed it, I realized I had something to say and a story I wanted to share. And that meant I had to be brave and let other people read it.
I’m really glad I did.
When Time Between Us sold to Disney-Hyperion in early 2011, I was absolutely blown away. When they said they wanted me to write a second book, I was totally floored. And when we collectively decided it would be a two-book series and the second book would be a sequel… I was overwhelmed and overjoyed and overcome with emotion. I hung up the phone and broke down in tears.
I initially structured Time Between Us as standalone, but in my heart, I always wanted to continue the story. Even though the first book felt complete — and I was really pleased with the way I ended it — I knew I wasn’t done with these characters, and they weren’t quite done with me. And I wanted to continue playing with time travel, using it to explore big decisions, turning points, and second chances — thinking about how the choices we make in life shape the people we become — but this time, from the time traveler’s point of view.
I’ve absolutely loved writing these two novels. Both books are very personal to me, with many of my own experiences woven into their pages.
- They honor teachers, because one of mine put me on a path I wouldn’t have found otherwise. He changed the course of my life and I’m forever grateful.
- They show tight-knit, supportive (even if complicated) families, because even though my own family tree is multi-branched and looks super funky in the front yard, I’m proud to call it mine.
- They celebrate strong-willed girls who know what they want and speak their minds, because I wasn’t one of those. Or rather, I was deep down, but it took me a while to find her and pull her out.
- They subtly share my experience about losing myself in a relationship, because I let that happen more times than I care to admit.
- They honor books and bookstores, because I’ve always loved the buildings that keep stories safe, the pretty shelves that display them, and the people who put them in just the right hands.
- They talk about traveling the world and seeing it with your own eyes, because as soon as I left the comfort and safety of my own cocoon, I was forever hooked. And changed.
I’ve learned so much about myself through these two books. Mostly, I’ve learned to be brave with my words (in fact, that’s the major theme of my next novel, EVERY LAST WORD).
But nothing brings me more joy than hearing that these two stories have had an impact on other people.
When readers tell me that my stories made them laugh, or moved them to tears, or that they hung a map on their bedroom wall, or started running, or tried rock climbing, or that they just applied for a job at a bookstore… When they tell me my stories made them think or see the world a bit differently… there are simply no words to describe that feeling. No. Words. It’s so inspiring and rewarding.
So THANK YOU to my vocal, passionate, amazing readers, who make me want to keep writing and keep being brave with my storytelling. You make this adventure so much fun.
