Check, Please.

Check, Please.

So… I just got to write the most amazing check.

Okay, I know that sounds weird, but bear with me. It’ll make sense in a second.

Here’s the check:

Vedder Check

I’ve never been excited about writing a check before, but I got to write a check to Eddie Vedder! The Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder.

Pearl Jam was kind enough to give me permission to use some of the lyrics from one of my favorite songs, Corduroy, in Time Between Us. And in exchange for my nominal payment, they all sent me their autographs!

Well, they signed a contract, but you know, it totally counts.

When you include more than two lines of lyrics in a novel, you not only need to recognize the original author of those words, you also need to compensate them. I could have reduced or excluded these lyrics and saved the cash, but to me, every line I included was important to this story.

These lyrics appear in two scenes, but they’re especially important to one. Anna is listening to Corduroy and even though she’s heard it many times before, she’s really hearing the words and internalizing them. They’re affecting her in that moment. I wanted those lyrics to affect readers too. I wanted you to feel them right along with her. I am so grateful to have those beautiful words where they’ve always belonged.

On a personal note, having this band play a role in this story is just so fitting. Anna and her best friend, Emma are huge Pearl Jam fans, but they’re not alone. Four people I love are also huge fans: my husband, Mike; his brother, Dave; and my two brothers, Ben and Jeff. All of them are musicians and/or big time music lovers. So while I’m a Pearl Jam fan too, their music really reminds me of those four incredible men in my life.

So one more huge thank you to Eddie Vedder, who wrote these beautiful words, and to the rest of Pearl Jam, who made them come to life. I’m so grateful to all of you for allowing me to include Corduroy in Time Between Us.

I’ll leave you with my very favorite, chill-inducing Pearl Jam moment. It was years ago, but I’ll never forget when Mike first showed me this:

Have chills? Also, can anyone tell me why epic concert moments always seem to happen in the Midwest? I might have to move.

There’s one more check I got to write to yet another epic band. Anyone know who it is?

Come back on Thursday and I’ll give you the story behind that one.

[…] that I might need to take them out if I couldn’t get permission to use them. But as with Pearl Jam’s Corduroy lyrics, once they were in the story, I couldn’t imagine that particular scene without […]

I’d put that on my wall, too. SO awesome. And that song. OH MAN THAT SONG. When I read it in the book it took be straight back to high school, because I used to BLAST IT in my car driving around with my friends.

    Love that video!

Okay, how much do I LOVE that you used to blast Corduroy in your car. That’s so Anna and Emma…

I wonder! It would have been amazing to have been there that night. I think I’ve watched this video 50 times while putting this post together and it moves me every time.

That is so cool! About 15 years ago I literally ran into Eddie Vedder leaving the NYC hotel I was staying in. He asked the doorman where he could go grab a bite to eat. I’ve forever regretted not offering to take him somewhere! Can’t wait to see who your next check is for…

That is so cool! That you were able to use the lyrics and get their autographs. LOL They were a huge part of 90’s music so this is pretty perfect and fitting. 🙂

Their music brings me right back to my days of living in San Francisco after college. Ahhh, good times.

I do have the contracts with their “autographs” hanging on the wall in my office. Because I am a major dork. 🙂
