Karen is one of the therapists who worked closely with me on Every Last Word. She offered valuable insights at many points along the way, but I credit her most with helping me understand the dynamics of the client/therapist relationship. From the very beginning, it was important to me that Samantha’s connection with her therapist felt close and inspiring, but also professional and realistic. If I achieved that balance, it’s largely because of Karen’s input.
She also introduced me to this incredible stuff called Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty, which ended up playing a huge role in the book (and in my own life, but more on that in a future post). Each one of Karen’s clients has his/her own personal tin of putty to play with during sessions. She says they find it soothing because it gives them something to do with their hands while they talk. I thought that was brilliant.

I’m so grateful for Karen’s help with my many clinical questions, for letting me steal her Thinking Putty to use in the book, and for sharing these kind words about the final novel. I hope her clients, and others, connect with Samantha and her story.
