If you’ve been following me for a while, or if we’ve met in person, you might know about this bowl on my office bookshelf. It’s special to me. Because it’s filled with your names. Some of you are in here twice. Others, even more.
You’ve probably noticed that when you’re standing in a signing line at a book event, a very kind person will write your name on a Post-it so the author will spell it correctly in your book. At my very first event—BEA in 2012—I was signing galleys of Time Between Us, when I realized a nice little pile of paper had formed next to me. Each one had a name on it. And each one felt special. At the end of the signing, I tucked all of them in my bag, brought them home, and found a pretty glass bowl for them to live in.
I’ve been collecting your names ever since. Three and half years, three books, and many events later, I have this incredibly special collection representing all the wonderful people I’ve had the opportunity to meet in person.
I’m out on the road for my last signing events of 2015. I can’t wait to meet you at NCTE and ALAN in Minneapolis or at the Miami Book Fair. And now, when I ask if I can keep your Post-it, you’ll know why. ?
